Fascinating – and from one not in the industry and from a consumer technology techophobe, a great piece to read.
I am actually am one of those niche consumers, I have thrown away all my CDs and DVDs and now drive my multimedia experience through itunes, apple TV and airtunes.
The integration of those products is second to none – however the downside is the availability of free TV content (iplayer, 4OD) and a decent store to find the content. (itunes is appaling)
With the ipad/tablet coming – then I will never have to sit at my PC/Mac ever again.. I will control the streaming of content around the house to my devices and use the tablet as a netbook.
One of the concepts I have always held is home based PCs. “why!!”
Cloud computing is finally catching up and this mixed with the availability of cloud storage solutions means that finally we can go to a thin client based option for the home.
Renting excel, MS word apps over the cloud and then storing the results in your own cloud storage should end the need for stand alone PCs.
The TV/audio centre then becomes the hub, attach a keyboard and there we go..
It just needs some more joined up thinking on content AND technology
